The Link Between Hormones and Happiness

By Dr. Nina Manipon, ND3/23/2025
The Link Between Hormones and Happiness

Hormones don't always get the credit they deserve — but they shape far more of your daily mood than most people realize. When we understand the hormones tied to happiness and how to support them, we gain real influence over how we feel.

How hormones work

Hormones are your body's chemical messengers, produced by the endocrine glands to coordinate nearly every process you depend on. How you nourish, move, and protect your body — and what you expose it to — directly affects how well these messengers can do their job.

The "happiness" hormones

A few key players shape mood and wellbeing:

  • Serotonin — a neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood; low or poorly functioning serotonin is closely tied to depression and anxiety.
  • Oxytocin — the "love hormone," involved in bonding, connection, and easing fear.
  • Dopamine — your reward and motivation chemical, activated by positive experiences and central to how the brain learns.

Supporting them naturally

Hormones work in a delicate balance — too much or too little of any one ripples outward. Some of the most powerful ways to support that balance are also the simplest: prioritize quality sleep, move your body regularly, lower your toxic load, and manage stress, which is one of the biggest disruptors of all. It's also worth noticing how hormonal birth control affects your mood, and talking options through with your provider if it doesn't sit well with you.

Eat for balance

Food is foundational. Favor healthy fats — avocado, nuts, wild salmon, olive and coconut oil — along with clean proteins and plenty of vegetables. Nutrients like vitamin D and magnesium are common shortfalls that affect mood, so it's worth knowing your levels rather than guessing.

Your hormones are deeply intertwined with how happy and steady you feel. Support them at the root — through sleep, movement, nourishment, and stress care — and you create the conditions for genuine, lasting wellbeing.
